Don Lee
Don Lee. a longtime sportswriter/golf editor for the Omaha World·Herald,
began his involvement with the sport of golf as a caddie at the Omaha Country Cub.
In the next 12 years. while serving in a variety of jobs at OCC, Lee worked his
way through Creighton University where he earned a Bachelor of Philosophy
in Journalism. He was selected into Alpha Sigma NU, the National Honor
Society which Is the Jesuit-school equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa.
During his 44 years at the World· Herald, Lee originated the Nebraska Fairway
Hall of Fame. In his travels around the state he wrote about the outstanding golf
holes in Nebraska. Awarding illustrative plaques to the clubs whose golf holes were so
honored.
Lee also revived the World-Herald Pub-links Golf Tournament after a World
War II interruption. An event that eventually has 600+ entries. The Championship Flight was recently named the Don Lee Right in his honor.
Don organized the Omaha Country Club Caddie Alumni Assocation which awards college scholarships to OCC caddies. No other golf dub in the country has such a program. Financed primarily by OCC members, it has sent hundreds of boys into college since it was organized in 1952. Association investments assure its continuation.
Don and his wlfe. Betty Jean have two children and three grandchildren. Son, Dennis is an Omaha attorney and chairman of the Nebraska State Racing Commission. Daughter, Judy Lee Kirchmann is the Supervisor of Guest
Relations for the Hyatt Hotel Corp. Dennis and Judy are fourth generation Creighton alumni.
